The annual Spring Festival travel rush saw 2.7 billion trips over 40 days as of Monday, CCTV reported on Tuesday, a drop of around 200 million compared to 2016.

The Ministry of Transport said that most travelers would have made their journey by road and rail, with the authorities estimating that 85 percent and 12 percent of travelers , respectively, are likely to have done so.

About 60 percent of people who took trains during the Spring Festival travel rush, or chunyun, this year chose high-speed rail, an increase from 45.5 percent of rail journeys in 2016 , the ministry said.

The way people buy their train tickets has also changed with the times.

Around 70 percent of train tickets were bought online this year, with around 60 percent of those being bought through mobile applications, according to data from qunar, a tourism website. Last year 64.6 percent of sales were made online, 39 percent of which were purchased via apps.

Road trips are particularly popular with white-collar workers , many of whom would take relatively short trips via car or coach to visit their loved ones, according to Alitrip, an online tourism platform cited in a CCTV report Tuesday.

More than 90 percent of road trips were inter-provincial, with people heading from megacities to less populous regions before the festival and flowing back in the opposite direction after the holidays.

Booking a free ride or renting a car online has become a newly popular way to get back home for the holidays.

More than 8 million people, equivalent to the total passenger capacity of 8 ,000 high-speed trains, carpooled their way home during chunyun, said CCTV.
