In 1982, the world's first DC electric arc furnace was manufactured in Germany. The central graphite electrode was used as the cathode access circuit. The bottom electrode was an anode, consisting of two horizontal metals. The metal plate was equipped with air-conducting cooling sheets. Many contacts were attached to the metal plate, and magnesia was filled between the contacts. The current flows into the contact pin through the horizontal metal plate at the bottom of the furnace and then passes into the molten pool. The operation of DC electric arc furnace is not different from that of AC electric arc furnace, but in order to keep good contact between charge and bottom electrode, some molten steel should be retained during tapping. For DC electric arc furnace, eccentric bottom tapping, water-cooled furnace wall, water-cooled furnace cover, oxygen-burner, scrap preheating and other new technologies are more appropriate, and the effect is better.

The main advantages of DC arc furnace are: low electrode consumption, only about half of three-phase AC arc furnace; low production cost. But because it is still in the process of continuous improvement, there are still many problems: poor contact between bottom electrode and burden; oxidation and boiling of steel rod bottom electrode; difficult maintenance of steel pin (needle) bottom electrode; easy carburization of graphite-magnesia brick; uneven temperature in furnace; poor heat dissipation of bottom electrode and so on. The drawback is that the local cost is higher when electricity price is higher.
